Maruti Suzuki hits landmark

Maruti Suzuki has crossed the 100,000-unit export milestone to Japan for its made-in-India Jimny 5-door, Fronx and e Vitara.

The achievement underlines the growing role of India as a manufacturing and export hub for the brand.

Japan has emerged as Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market by volume. The country retained the position during April to August of financial year 2026/27 after ranking second in 2025/26.

The Fronx was the first of the three models to be exported to Japan with shipments starting in August 2024. The Jimny 5-door followed in December 2024 and the e Vitara, pictured, joined the fold in September last year.

The Jimny 5-door and e Vitara are manufactured exclusively in India. The e Vitara is Maruti Suzuki’s first battery electric vehicle and is also exported to several international markets.

The growing acceptance of its India-made models helped Suzuki Motor Corporation become the number one car importer in Japan during 2025/26, according to Maruti Suzuki.

Vehicles it made accounted for nearly 100 per cent of the marque’s imports into its domestic market during the financial year, reports India Today.

Hisashi Takeuchi, managing director and chief executive officer of Maruti Suzuki India, describes the 100,000-unit achievement as an endorsement of India’s manufacturing capabilities and the India-Japan partnership.

Maruti Suzuki has continued to expand its international footprint with its models now reaching nearly 120 countries via its parent company’s network.

The carmaker exported more than 180,000 units between April and August 2026/27 and has remained India’s largest passenger vehicle exporter from 2021/22 through to 2025/26. It claims to account for more than 50 per cent of India’s passenger-vehicle exports.
