Marque’s leading trio soar

There were 9,683 used-imported cars sold last month. That was a drop of 60.2 per cent compared to 24,337 in March last year, which was the last month for registrations before the full clean car discount (CCD) scheme was launched.

Toyota’s Aqua and Prius maintained their grip on the top two spots of the models’ ladder with 1,469 and 992 sales, respectively. The Aqua, pictured, claimed 15.2 per cent of the market, while the Prius had a 10.2 per cent share.

Mazda’s Axela was the third best-seller on 458 registrations, followed by the Nissan Leaf on 400 units – both dropping more than 20 per cent from the numbers achieved a year earlier.

The Toyota Corolla completed the top five with 349 sales. Last month saw year-on-year sales figures for Toyota’s leading trio jump 99.1 per cent for the Aqua, 222.1 per cent for the Prius and 122.3 per cent for the Corolla.

Year to date, the Aqua leads its rivals on 3,757 registrations and 15.3 per cent of the market, followed by the Prius on 2,336 and 9.5 per cent, and the Axela on 1,328 and 5.4 per cent.

March’s top marque was Toyota with 3,907 registrations, which was down 26.1 per cent from 5,286 in the same month of last year. This gave it 40.3 per cent of the total market.

Nissan claimed second spot with 1,449 units, down 61.9 per cent from 3,804 a year ago, and a 15 per cent share.

Mazda, Honda and Subaru were next with 1,202, 690 and 536 sales, respectively, and all down on their performances from the previous March as the CCD influenced market activity.

March registrations fell in all the regions year-on-year, with Northland recording the smallest decline of 25.5 per cent as sales slipped from 200 to 149.
