Marque unveils EV target

Mitsubishi Motors has announced plans to electrify all of the cars it sells worldwide by the middle of the next decade and to launch 16 new models over the next five years.

The Japanese carmaker also says it will invest up to ¥1.8 trillion ($21.2 billion) on electrification by 2030.

It is sticking to a previous goal of having half of its new car sales being either plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), hybrids or battery electric vehicles (BEVs) by fiscal 2030.

Mitsubishi, while recently detailing its business plan for the next three years, says it aims to raise that target to 100 per cent by fiscal 2035.

Electrified vehicles accounted for about seven per cent of the company’s total new car sales in fiscal 2021, reports Reuters.

Of the new models in the pipeline, the company says seven will be purely combustion engine-powered ones, five will be hybrids and four will be BEVs.

Takao Kato, president of Mitsubishi Motors, says the next three years “represent an opportunity for Mitsubishi Motors to pivot to a new era” as it seeks to decarbonise its operations.
