Listings’ hidden meanings

What car adverts of the past used to say and what they really meant is the subject of a hilarious social media post that has been shared online.

The image shared by Rachel Liu on the Facebook page, Traffic Updates – Horowhenua Kapiti Wellington, is a guide to how to interpret antique car ads.

It suggests “rare model” on a listing actually means “nobody liked them when new either”, while “needs engine work” translates to “it’s been frozen for 30 years”.

Other gems on the list include the hidden meaning of the phrase “one owner” being “never been able to sell”, and “many new parts” equating to “keeps breaking down”.

The post has attracted scores of laughs and likes since it went up on June 14.
