Liam Lawson scored points for the third time in the past four grands prix after finishing ahead of defending Formula 1 world champion and former team-mate Max Verstappen in Hungary.

The New Zealander started the race at the Hungaroring on Monday (NZ time) ninth on the grid before finishing eighth, matching his effort from the previous weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Lawson, pictured, is now 15th in the drivers’ standings on 20 points and only two points back from his Racing Bulls team-mate Isack Hadjar, who finished 11th in Budapest.

Red Bull’s Verstappen, who Lawson was partnered with for the opening two races of the 2025 season, had to settle for ninth after the Kiwi kept him at bay over the closing stages of the race.

Lando Norris took the chequered flag as McLaren secured a one-two finish with current championship leader Oscar Piastri in second place.

Mercedes’ George Russell completed the podium and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari settled for fourth after starting from pole position.

Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda, who traded places with Lawson early in the season, finished 17th and is 18th overall for the season.

The F1 competition now takes a break before returning to action with the Dutch Grand Prix on September 1.
