Latest airbag recall procedures

From 31 May 2018, registered motor vehicle traders may not sell a vehicle fitted with a Takata alpha-type airbag inflator to the public, unless it has been reworked. This includes trade-ins.

Key points:

Please note: selling an affected vehicle to the public after 31 May that has not been reworked could lead to a fine of up to $200,000 for an individual, or $600,000 for a company.

VIA is working with the MIA and manufacturers' official importers in New Zealand, to develop processes for the repair and recertification of affected vehicles.

We are also continuing to work closely with NZTA and MBIE, on all issues relating to the recall.

In the meantime, we advise dealers to check their vehicles urgently against information on the Right Car website.

If you have a vehicle that has not been reworked, you should contact the manufacturer's representative in New Zealand and start the replacement process.

We have applied to the Minister of Consumer Affairs for an extension of this timeline, but to date have received no response.

VIA will continue to communicate all developments to our members as they arise.
