Last hurrah for WRX?

The all-new WRX has “evolved” as the symbol of Subaru all-wheel-drive sport performance, says the marque.

Ever since the first model hit the streets back in 1992, it has gained worldwide support from enthusiasts for combining sport performance with the practicality of a four-door sedan.

The WRX’s power unit has been upgraded to the 2.4-litre direct injection Subaru Boxer turbo for strong, quick and responsive acceleration. 

The engine is installed on a highly rigid body and the chassis is built on the marque’s global platform with full inner-frame construction to enhance responsiveness and ride comfort.

In addition, Subaru’s performance transmission incorporates adaptive shift control for quicker response. 

“There has been much excitement around the global reveal of this much-anticipated new-generation WRX,” says Wallis Dumper, managing director of Subaru of New Zealand.

“Subaru Corporation has exceeded expectations, and we can’t wait to give Kiwis the opportunity to get behind the wheel and experience the thrill of the 2.4 turbo. 

“We look forward to sharing more information about this special new performance model with enthusiasts in coming months.

“This could be the last chance for performance car devotees to get their hands on a WRX as we know it, given the rapid shift in the automotive market towards electric vehicles and changes imposed by government legislation.”

The new model is scheduled to go on sale in the US in 2022. While a New Zealand launch date has yet to be confirmed, information on timings and local specification will be revealed closer to the release date.
