KP31 delivers global first

Chery has unveiled its KP31 concept at a showcase hosted by the company in Sydney. It says it will be the world’s first ute to feature a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) diesel system.

The 2.5-litre turbocharged engine will offer “class leading” thermal efficiency rated at 47 per cent and will be 10 per cent more fuel efficient compared to the average diesel powertrain.

The KP31 will provide a 1,000kg payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity. Noise, vibration and harshness levels are a major focus with the production version providing a 30 per cent vibration reduction compared to the average diesel.

“We’re excited to finally reveal the KP31 concept,” says Lucas Harris, Chery Australia’s chief operating officer. “It’s also riveting to be the first brand to offer a diesel PHEV in the dual-cab ute class, which will be our key point of difference.”

Visually, the KP31 concept, pictured, has large Chery lettering at the front and rear, a snorkel, chunky 285/70 R17 all-terrain tyres, a tub rack with four-by-four recovery tracks and is finished in matte-grey paint.

The concept ute is 5,610mm long, 1,920mm wide and 1,925mm tall, while the production ute will be slightly shorter with a length of 5,450mm. A petrol PHEV powertrain will also join the line-up in 2027 after the diesel variant launches down under later this year.
