Kiwi tests for PHEV ute
JAC has officially begun its New Zealand pre-launch testing programme for the T9 PHEV, marking the next step in bringing the electrified workhorse to Kiwis.
It says early indications suggest the performance, specifications and technology on offer will position the ute as competitive in the market.
The marque has established a strong presence in this country through its utility and truck line-up with the diesel variant of the T9 launched early 2025.
JAC says it’s also proven in EV technology with its electric-truck range, supporting local fleets including Woolworths, KiwiHarvest, Kaibosh, Fieldays and a winery among others alongside global operators such as DHL, Heineken, Kraft Heinz, PepsiCo and Ikea.
The high-performance plug-in hybrid ute will now undergo its local testing under the brand’s “tested by Kiwis, for Kiwis” philosophy.
JAC’s New Zealand team will apply the same approach taken with the diesel T9 prior to its local launch by completing hundreds of hours of testing across tarmac, mud, snow, sleet, gravel and rivers.
The programme builds on testing also being conducted in Australia where JAC worked with local experts and utilised facilities including Holden’s former Lang Lang Proving Ground.
The marque first unveiled the T9 PHEV here at Fieldays in June 2025, showcasing a bold orange prototype designed to capture attention and gather real-world feedback.
Everyday Kiwis including farmers, tradies and families were invited to share their expectations and feedback with insights fed directly into vehicle development.
Andrew Craw, general manager of JAC NZ, says the timing of a PHEV ute for the local market couldn’t be better.
He adds: “We’re excited to be putting the T9 through its paces here. There’s never been a more relevant time for a vehicle like this as Kiwis look for options that balance performance, capability and efficiency.
“Putting it through real-world conditions is critical to making sure it delivers where it matters most so we can say with confidence it does what it says on the tin.”
JAC will share updates as testing progresses with the vehicle set to travel from the Far North to the Deep South. The local testing will put the PHEV through its full range of ute duties from towing and off-roading to everyday worksites, family demand and “giving it a proper Kiwi thrashing”.
