Kishida to become Japan’s next PM

Fumio Kishida has won the race to lead Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and become the next prime minister.

The former foreign minister won a run-off against vaccine minister Taro Kono on September 29 by 257 votes to 170.

The 64-year-old will succeed Yoshihide Suga, who decided to step down after just one year in office and tumbling poll ratings.

Kishida, pictured, will now set his sights on leading the LDP to victory in a general election that must be called by November 28.

Given the LDP’s majority in parliament, Kishida's position as prime minister has been all but cemented.

He will face a range of tough issues in his new role, including dealing with the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery and confronting threats from North Korea.

He says: “My skill is to really listen to people. I’m determined to make efforts with everyone for an open LDP and a bright future for Japan.”
