International show ditches 2022 plans

The Geneva International Motor Show is off the calendar for a third straight year, with organisers blaming “industry-wide issues relating to the Covid-19 pandemic”.

They have decided not to organise the event for 2022 and instead focus on preparations for 2023, when it is hoped the coronavirus crisis will be having less of an impact on day-to-day life.

In a statement on October 7, the organisers say direct and indirect issues linked to the pandemic left them “with no alternative” but to ditch plans for next year.

These issues include persisting travel restrictions for exhibitors, visitors, and journalists, as well as an ongoing global semiconductor crisis, which is leaving carmakers with new priorities, they explain.

The decision comes after the show’s 2020 and 2021 editions were also cancelled following the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, reports Reuters.

Maurice Turrettini, who runs the committee in charge of the show, says: “The pandemic situation is not under control and presents itself as a big threat for a large indoor event.

“I am confident that the Geneva International Motor Show will come back stronger than ever in 2023.”
