IKEA gets charged up

IKEA New Zealand has partnered with Jump Charging to develop and deliver an electric-vehicle charging ecosystem.

It aims to support the retailer’s aim of zero-emissions home deliveries across Auckland and, in the future, across New Zealand as well as making EV charging accessible and convenient for staff and customers.

The two businesses have worked together to design a solution they describe as scalable, future-proof and aligned to IKEA’s long-term sustainability ambitions.

At the recently opened store at Sylvia Park in Auckland, Jump Charging has installed two 100kW Kempower DC station chargers, each with dual CCS2 connectors. These power Mainfreight and NZ Post electric last-mile delivery vehicles.

In addition, there are 25 Wallbox Commander 2 AC 7.4kWchargers for customers and IKEA’s employees to use.

At IKEA’s external warehouse in Mangere, there are now six 100kW Kempower DC station chargers to service last-mile delivery vehicles and inter-site transport.

With its delivery partners NZ Post and Mainfreight, IKEA NZ is now achieving 100 per cent electric deliveries in the Auckland metropolitan area with the ambition of expanding this for the wider network across the motu.

Alexandra Kelly, zero-emissions delivery lead at IKEA NZ, says: “We are incredibly pleased to have collaborated with Jump Charging on the charging infrastructure at our Sylvia Park store and Mangere warehouse to make that a reality.

“Zero-emissions delivery is at the heart of our market entry to New Zealand. Alongside home deliveries, we’re proud to be able to offer EV charging to customers and co-workers while at the Sylvia Park store.”

Alex Watson, chief executive of Jump Charging, adds: “A business’ success is only as good as the reliability of its operations. As a global leader in the transition to zero-emissions deliveries, IKEA must be able to rely on its partners and we are honoured they have placed their trust in Jump Charging.

“Our priority is delivering solutions that are not only designed and built to meet our customers’ needs but work first time every time. That focus underpinned this project as we worked with the IKEA team to ensure the best outcomes for the business, now and into the future.

“As an end-to-end solution provider serving the commercial and heavy-transport sectors, we understand the importance of dependable products and full support. Building long-term relationships gives our customers the confidence their infrastructure not only works but becomes an enabler for commercial success.”

Additional key features delivered by Jump Charging include:

• Deployment of intelligent load management across AC and DC chargers, enabling control of energy distribution to optimise site capacity, protect electrical infrastructure and ensure reliable operation during peak demand.

• Hardwired ethernet connectivity for all AC chargers to ensure reliable communication with the charging management system (CMS), mitigating the risk of interference in the ground-floor car park.

• Seamless integration of existing staff chargers into the Nova Energy’s charge hub platform.

• Centralised emergency-stop capability for AC charger banks and individual e-stops for each DC charger, enabling rapid and controlled shutdown if required.

• Comprehensive training for IKEA’s transport providers and customer-facing teams to support day-to-day operation of the system.

Jump Charging will also manage and maintain IKEA’s charging infrastructure on an ongoing basis, supported by Nova’s charge hub CMS for monitoring, reporting and billing.
