Hyundai offers latest sedan as hybrid

Hyundai has gone long and low with its new look i30 Sedan and added a hybrid version of the model for the first time.

The seventh-generation vehicle features a longer wheelbase, wider stance and a lower roofline, with production due to start this year in Ulsan, Korea.

Technological innovations include a digital key, a voice-recognition system to control a variety of features and two 10.25-inch multimedia screens.

“While some manufacturers no longer see the value in the car side of the business, we’re doubling down by offering an all-new model with both petrol and hybrid powertrains,” says Jose Munoz, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America.

Known as the Elantra in the US, the car has sold more than 13.8 million units worldwide.

A hybrid powertrain has been added to the i30 line-up and features a 1.6-litre GDI Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine. Its permanent-magnet electric motor delivers 32kW powered by a lithium-ion-polymer battery with 1.32kWh of capacity positioned under the rear seats. The combined output is 103kW and up to 264Nm torque and the engine mates with a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission

The i30 Sedan models offer the 2.0L MPI Atkinson Cycle engine that also has a focus on fuel economy and generates 109kW and 179Nm of torque.

Hyundai claims the new i30 Sedan weighs less, has better fuel economy and is stronger compared to the previous generation, thanks to a new vehicle platform. It also boasts 402 litres of boot space.

Hyundai launched its 2021 i30 Sedan and i30 Sedan Hybrid at The Lot Studios in West Hollywood, with the March 18 (NZ time) event broadcast live around the world. You can watch it all in the video below.
