Horse-drawn carriage confuses EV
A Tesla computer was left bamboozled by a horse-drawn carriage that caused the electric car’s high-tech self-driving system to glitch while travelling along a highway.
Software in the Model Y struggled to recognise what it was approaching and the screen on the dashboard shows the vehicle mistakenly identifying the carriage as a truck, a sedan and a pedestrian.
When the truck is on screen it rapidly shifts backwards and sideways, despite the old-school means of travel it’s trying to represent sedately plodding along.
The in-car footage was captured outside of Zurich, Switzerland, and since originally being posted on TikTok in August this year has been watched by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.
Tesla uses a computer vision system in its self-driving technology that allows cars to “see” its environment including potholes, pedestrians and surrounding vehicles.
However, it can only pick up what engineers input and it seems a horse and carriage did not make the cut.
