High demand for hybrids

Marque reports fast-increasing ratio of new hybrid registrations compared to sales of models with petrol and diesel engines.

Toyota NZ says its electrified vehicles continue to perform strongly with its new hybrid sales coming in at 42 per cent of its overall October total.

Neeraj Lala, chief executive officer, says the marque competed well last month across its portfolio of compacts, SUVs, utes and vans as the RAV4 and Corolla finished second on the ladder.

He adds Toyota is currently experiencing “staggering” consumer demand across its hybrid-electric range with such models now accounting for 38 per cent of year-to-date registrations.

“We’re seeing customers choosing to move to electrified products with the ratio of hybrid to petrol and diesel sales sitting at over 40 per cent,” he says. “In October with the RAV4 alone we delivered 869 vehicles, of which 86 per cent were hybrid-electric variants.”

The increased percentage of hybrid sales has seen overall average carbon-dioxide emissions for Toyota drop to 149g/km – down by 2.6 per cent on 153g/km in September.

Lexus NZ also had a strong October and is on-track to deliver a record number of vehicles in 2021 with a 69 per cent mix of electrified product.

Lala says: “We are excited to announce the arrival of some exciting new electrified product including the new UX300e, which is close to being sold out for this year already.”
