Global EV demand ‘resilient’

Global sales of EVs came in at two million units last month as “resilient” demand for such models took the year-to-date total to 18.5 million.

The number of BEV and PHEV sales between January and November this year is 21 per cent higher than during the same period in 2024, according to statistics from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.

Charles Lester, data manager for Rho Motion, which is owned by Benchmark, says the European market led November’s growth after a year-on-year rise of 36 per cent.

He notes the increase in EV sales was driven by new incentives in some jurisdictions and wider model availability.

“France and Italy both saw renewed momentum from national support, while the UK expanded its subsidy list to support further uptake,” adds Lester.

“In contrast, North America remains subdued following the end of US tax credits, whereas China continues to dominate with 11.6 million units sold year-to-date, up 19 per cent.

“Overall, EV demand remains resilient, supported by expanding model ranges and sustained policy incentives worldwide.”

A snapshot of figures for different parts of the world show Europe has sold 3.8 million BEVs and PHEVs so far this year, an increase of 33 per cent from the same period last year.

North America’s year-to-date tally was down one per cent to 1.7 million, while the rest of the world has registered 1.5 million electric units for a 48 per cent rise.
