Gilmour leaves extreme team

Emma Gilmour is leaving the NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team after two years of racing electric SUVs in rugged environments around the world.

The Kiwi, who is dealer principal and manager of Gilmour Motors Suzuki in Dunedin, made history when she became the first woman to drive for McLaren Racing by representing the team in the Extreme E championship.

Her teammate, American Tanner Foust, is also on the move after the pair, pictured above, have been part of the team since its inception and inaugural race in 2022.

“As a Kiwi, it has been unbelievably special to have driven for the NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team for the past two years, and to make history as McLaren Racing’s first-ever female driver,” says Gilmour.

“It was amazing to race in some of the most extreme locations in the world, including Saudi Arabia, Chile and Uruguay, and to come through to secure those hard-fought podiums.

“I’m grateful for the team’s incredible support and for the unforgettable highlights we enjoyed together. I wish everyone at McLaren Racing all the best.”

During their time with the McLaren team, Gilmour and Foust have secured two second-place finishes, one in Uruguay in 2022 and the other in Scotland this year.

Gilmour’s 2023 season came to a premature end in September after she was involved in a spectacular crash at an Extreme E race in Sardinia, Italy, and suffered concussion.

Gary Paffett, the team’s sporting director, thanked the drivers for their “incredible work” over the past two years.

“With their help, we’ve established a strong foundation in the Extreme E Championship, and secured two P2 finishes along the way,” he adds.

“It’s no secret that we’ve faced some challenges during our time in the championship so far, but their support has been invaluable and we are all incredibly grateful. We wish them all the best for the future.”
