Vehicle Inspection NZ (VINZ) has appointed Tony Gibson, the former boss at Ports of Auckland Ltd (POAL), as its new chief executive officer and managing director.

Gibson, pictured, started his new role on August 22 and his appointment follows the resignation of Sean Stevens as chief executive of VINZ in June.

VINZ told Autofile Online: “Tony will lead the business through a time of significant global change in the automotive space, particularly related to the movement of freight and the ownership of motor vehicles.”

Stevens left the chief executive officer position at the end of July and Euan Philpot, director of VINZ, filled the role on an interim basis before Gibson started work this week.

Gibson has more than 30 years’ experience in shipping and logistics and has worked in various senior roles in Africa, Asia and Europe.

He was appointed managing director of P & O Nedlloyd, New Zealand and Pacific Islands in 2002. Following a takeover by Maersk, he then served as managing director of Maersk New Zealand for three years.

Gibson joined POAL as chief executive in 2011 and held that position for 10 years before resigning in May last year.
