Ford Ranger in recall over transmission woes

Ford is recalling more than 2,000 vehicles, including units of its best-selling Ranger, after the marque discovered a potential transmission problem.

The Ranger and the seven-seater Everest are both affected by the recall notice, which is believed to centre around vehicles featuring Ford’s newer 10-speed automatic transmission.

“In affected vehicles, the transmission fluid pump gears could fail while driving,” Ford NZ says in a statement.

“Transmission fluid pump gear failure can cause a loss of hydraulic fluid pressure in the transmission, which can result in a loss of motive power.

“We’ve contacted customers directly and advised them to bring their vehicle into their Ford dealer where it can be sorted free of charge.”

The recall covers 2,036 vehicles in New Zealand and nearly 16,000 in Australia. The models potentially affected are Rangers manufactured between December 19, 2017, and September 2019, and selected Everests built from November 27, 2017, to July 2, 2019.

Ford's Ranger is New Zealand's top selling vehicle, with 2,584 units sold in the first five months of this year and nearly 9,500 registrations in 2019.
