F1 ace drives Lego sports car
A life-size, drivable replica of the McLaren P1 has been created out of thousands of Lego Technic elements and put through its paces by a Formula 1 driver.
The unique sports car, part of a collaboration between McLaren Automotive and the Lego Group, features 342,817 Lego pieces, weighs about 1,220kg and boasts fully functional steering.
An electric powertrain comprised of Lego Technic Function batteries and eight motor packs, each made up of 96 Lego Power Function motors, have been used to emulate the performance of the McLaren P1’s V8 engine.
A team of 23 specialists from Lego and McLaren took 8,344 hours to complete the vehicle, which McLaren Formula 1 star Lando Norris then took on a lap around the 5.9km Silverstone Circuit in the UK.
The British-Belgium driver says the replica car “drives pretty good” although his one concern was “the wing mirrors flap a little bit”.
