EVs make charge for honour
Motoring writers prepare to pick winner for annual honour as they mull a top 10 of new vehicles.

Half of the 10 contenders vying for an annual automotive award are pure electric vehicles, with the remaining finalists available as hybrid variants as an increasing number of electrified cars hit the market.
Nine different marques are represented among the finalists for this year’s New Zealand Car of the Year title, which is voted for by the New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild.
The shortlist features the Audi E-Tron GT, Ford Escape, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia Sorento, Mazda MX-30, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Peugeot 208, Skoda Octavia, Toyota GR Yaris and Toyota Highlander.
The winner will be decided by the guild’s 24 voting members and announced live on TVNZ One’s Seven Sharp programme in February 2022. Last year’s winner was the Mercedes-Benz EQC.
