Evans nails race strategy

Mitch Evans has set a new record for the most Formula E victories since the series began after claiming his 16th race win in the second round at the Berlin E-Prix.

The New Zealander started 17th on the grid but delivered a strategic masterclass built on energy management and well-timed attack-mode deployments to take the chequered flag.

It was his second win of the current AIB Formula E World Championship season and moved him into second in the drivers’ standings on 98 points. Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein tops the ladder with 101 points.

Evans, pictured, also picked up vital points for himself and his Jaguar TCS Racing team a day earlier when he finished sixth in the opening action of the weekend in Germany.

He says his win in the eighth race of the 17-round championship was an amazing result after a difficult weekend, when he compromised on qualifying for the second E-Prix to preserve his tyres.

“We’ve been struggling for one-lap pace here, so I wanted to try something different, which is why I saved tyres for the race today,” he explains.

“The team backed me on that call and then together we executed a perfect race. We were patient early on, then attacked at the right time and I felt comfortable once we got to the front.

“Now we’ll look to take this momentum to Monaco, which feels like a home race to me.”

Nick Cassidy, the other New Zealand driver in the championship, had fluctuating fortunes in Berlin after coming second in the first race, behind Porsche’s Nico Muller, but failing to finish in the next one.

That leaves the Citroen Racing driver sixth in the standings on 69 points.

Cassidy says he was really happy with his podium placing and proud of what the team achieved.

“I think we got absolutely everything out of the race that we could, so it’s a very satisfying result,” he adds.

“It’s honestly one of my best performances in Formula E, which means a lot, especially here in Berlin, a track that’s been good to me in the past.”

The Formula E competition is next in action with the Monaco E Prix double header on May 16-17.
