Evans nails race strategy

Mitch Evans has closed the gap on the leaders of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championships after clinching his third victory of the season in the inaugural Jakarta E-Prix.

The result puts the Kiwi, part of the Jaguar TCS Racing team, fourth in the drivers’ standings and only 12 points behind leader Stoffel Vandoorne. Evans’ teammate Sam Bird finished ninth.

Evans, pictured, started the race third on the grid and was among the leading pack throughout the race before a daring overtake on Jean-Eric Vergne with six minutes to go put him out front.

The 27-year-old held the lead until the chequered flag and also secured the fastest lap of 1:09.786.

“It feels amazing to get my third win of the season,” says Evans. “Physically, today was really quite difficult, the temperature and humidity were both really high, but we managed to get our strategy right for pretty much the whole race.”

Jaguar TCS Racing remain fourth in the teams’ standings and James Barclay, principal, described the June 6 race as “really strategic and challenging”.

“It was incredibly close racing all the way through and required cool heads and a well-executed race and that is exactly what Mitch and the team delivered, I am very proud of everyone,” he says.

The 10th round of the championship takes place in Morocco’s capital Marrakesh on July 2.
