Electric ute hits road

BYD, the Chinese electric-vehicle specialist, is looking to launch its first ute into global markets later this year.

Photographs released by the company show a camouflaged boxy dual-cab truck being road tested.

It has yet to release details on the powertrain, performance specifications or pricing, but says the mid to full-size vehicle will be its first “new energy” pick-up.

The marque has been pushing into markets, such as New Zealand, Australia, Asia and South America, where utes are popular.

The pick-up will add to BYD’s broad line-up of EVs. The company secured a 33 per cent share of China’s electric-car market last year. Isuzu, meanwhile, unveiled an electric version of the D-Max last month.
