Top ratings for electric models
ANCAP has confirmed top safety ratings for three battery electric vehicles (BEVs) – Toyota’s Hilux, and Subaru’s Trailseeker and Uncharted. The BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe received four stars.
Diesel variants of the Hilux received a five-star safety rating in December 2025. Following the introduction of BEV variants, ANCAP conducted frontal offset and oblique-pole crash tests.
These additional tests assess the battery integrity and safety of the high-voltage electrical systems in two severe collision types. They verified the variants of the Hilux BEV, pictured, deliver comparable safety performance to their diesel equivalents.
As a result, all Hiluxes, excluding the Rugged X, now hold the top safety rating.
“In an increasing market of alternative-powered utes, business and private buyers now have another option that balances their safety needs with powertrain considerations,” says Carla Hoorweg, ANCAP’s chief executive officer.
Subaru’s newest nameplates, the Trailseeker and Uncharted, have also achieved five stars. The ratings for the two all-electric SUVs are largely based on the related Toyota bZ4X, with extra crash tests and assessments undertaken to confirm comparable performance.
“The addition of the Trailseeker and Uncharted to Subaru’s growing electric portfolio sees yet more safe choices for consumers,” comments Hoorweg.
The BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe have been given four-star ratings. These are based on testing of the 1 Series, with an extra side-impact test conducted on the 2 Series Gran Coupe to account for differences in the side structure.
Both models performed well for crash-avoidance capability. However, their overall ratings were limited by mixed results in the two frontal-crash tests when there was an elevated risk of chest injury for the driver in the MPDB test, and for the chests of the driver and rear passenger in the full-width frontal test,
Dashboard structures also posed potential upper-leg injury risk to the driver and front passenger in the MPDB test. The 1 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupe received adult-occupant protection scores of 78 per cent, two per cent below the threshold required for five stars.
