Electric SUV delivers plenty of firsts

Hyundai has officially unveiled the Ioniq 5, with the all-electric, mid-size SUV set to arrive here in the second half of 2021.

It is the first model from Hyundai’s new Ioniq sub-brand dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and is the first vehicle to ride on Hyundai, Kia and Genesis’ electric-global modular platform (E-GMP).

The front of the car has Hyundai’s first clamshell bonnet, which is designed to minimise panel gaps for optimal aerodynamics, and auto flush door handles further enhance aerodynamic efficiency.

Built on a 3,000mm wheelbase, it also features 20-inch aero-optimised wheels.

Customers can select from two battery pack options, either 58kWh or 72.6kWh, and two electric motor layouts, a rear motor only or front and rear motors.

All variants can deliver a top speed of 185kph and an all-wheel drive (AWD) option paired with the 72.6kWh battery produces a combined power output of 225kWh and 605Nm of torque. This configuration can go from 0-100kph in 5.2 seconds.

Combining two-wheel drive with the 72.6kWh battery offers a range of about 480km on a single charge, according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) standard.

The Ioniq 5 has a multi-charging system that supports 400V and 800V charging infrastructures. With a 350kW charger, the car can charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes.

It also provides a V2L function that allows customers to charge any electric devices, such as electric bicycles, scooters or camping equipment, from the vehicle.

On the inside, there is a moveable centre console, electronically adjustable front seats, and Hyundai has reduced the thickness of the front seats by 30 per cent to provide more space for passengers in the second row.

Interior touchpoints such as the seats, headliner, door trim, floor and armrest use a range of eco-friendly, sustainably sourced materials, including recycled PET bottles, natural wool yarns, and eco-processed leather with plant-based extracts.

The cockpit features a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12-inch digital gauge cluster that can be customised to meet customers’ needs.

There is also an augmented reality head-up display, which essentially turns the windshield into a display screen.

Safety systems in the vehicle include highway driving assist, forward collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, intelligent speed limit assist and driver attention warning.
