Ferrari will unleash its first fully electric model after 2025, with battery technology still requiring more development, says chief executive Louis Camilleri.

The luxury carmaker previously said a fully electric vehicle would be launched after 2022, but Camilleri has pushed back on that date.

He says while Ferrari is investigating the creation of a fully electric grand tourer car, it will stick to hybrid vehicles for the “foreseeable future”, reports Reuters.

“My sense is the electric will come out after 2025,” Camilleri says. “The battery technology is not where it should be yet.

“There are still significant issues in terms of autonomy, in terms of speed of recharging. So eventually we will come out with one. But it's post-2025. Not in the short term.”

Ferrari this year unveiled the SF90 Stradale, pictured above, its first hybrid car in series-production. The marque wants 60 per cent of its cars sold by 2022 to be hybrids.

Camilleri says the group is also looking at alternative technologies for its cars, including hydrogen and biofuels.
