Double success for hatchback

The MG4 has clinched an awards double after being named the 2023 New Zealand Car of the Year by the New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild.

The fully electric hatchback’s success comes after it was also crowned the AA Driven Car Guide New Zealand Car of the Year for 2023.

Arek Zywot, MG New Zealand country manager, says the vehicle made a positive impression on guild members and the company is “deeply honoured” to have taken out another title.

The MG4’s latest triumph means electric vehicles (EVs) have won the guild’s annual award five years in a row.

Other EVs to clinch the gong are BYD’s Atto 3 in 2022, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 in 2021, the Mercedes-Benz EQC in 2020 and the Jaguar I-Pace in 2019.

The MG4 was chosen for the 2023 honour ahead of nine other finalists, which were the BMW i7, Cupra Born, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Lexus RZ 450e, Mercedes-Benz EQE, Nissan X-Trail, Peugeot 308 and Skoda Enyaq.

Judges assessed the contenders on a range of criteria including how the vehicle performs its intended role, its styling, ride and refinement, performance, value for money, and environmental responsibility.
