Dixon stutters in title defence

Scott Dixon has slipped to third in the IndyCar championship after a disappointing weekend at the series’ doubleheader in Detroit.

The defending titleholder, pictured, finished seventh in the second race on June 14 (NZT) after claiming eighth spot in the previous day’s action.

His fellow Kiwi, Scott McLaughlin, came away from the Raceway at Belle Isle Park with 19th and 20th placings but remains the leading rookie in the series and is 12th in the championship.

Mexican Pato O’Ward leads the driver’ standings with 299 points after winning the second race at Detroit and is one point ahead of Dixon’s Spanish teammate Alex Palou.

Dixon, a six-time champion, is 35 points further back in third with the 2021 series at its halfway stage.

Sweden’s Marcus Ericsson won the weekend’s opening clash and moved up to seventh on the ladder.
