Dixon clinches sixth IndyCar title

Scott Dixon has quickly set his sights on further success just minutes after securing his sixth IndyCar championship.

The Kiwi driver’s latest title, which adds to his triumphs in 2003, 2008, 2013, 2015 and 2018, moves him to within one crown of A.J. Foyt’s record.

Dixon finished third in the season finale in St Petersburg, Florida, on October 26. The 40-year-old had gone into the race knowing a ninth or better finish would be enough to clinch the title.

“Six is good, seven sounds better. That's obviously got to be the goal.” he said when asked about the possibility of matching Foyt’s record.

Dixon, driving for the Chip Ganassi Racing, won the opening three four races of the 2020 season and at one stage held a 117-point lead over his rivals.

American Josef Newgarden closed the gap as the campaign went on and after victory in the final race ended the series only 16 points behind Dixon.

New Zealander Scott McLaughlin, who was making his IndyCar debut just weeks after securing the SuperCars Championship, retired from the race after tangling with other drivers on a corner. McLaughlin has been confirmed as a full-time driver for Team Penske in 2021.
