Dealer numbers slip lower

The number of dealers in New Zealand fell to 3,075 at the end of January, according to figures released by the Motor Vehicle Traders Register (MVTR).

This was four fewer than for the previous month and a drop of 148 from the end of January 2020 when 3,223 were registered.

The latest tally marks five consecutive months of decreases after numbers rose in June, July and August last year before peaking at 3,122.

Dealer numbers have largely been in decline since hitting a high of 3,536 in November 2017.

The MVTR holds essential information about registered traders and their businesses. It is operated by Trading Standards, a business unit of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
