Corolla gets crossover version

Toyota New Zealand has upsized one of its most popular cars with the introduction of the Corolla Cross to its line-up.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is larger than a Corolla Hatch, with some of the benefits including a higher ride and more cargo space. It also delivers 750kg braked tow rating and, in the top model, an all-wheel-drive system.
Under the bonnet is a new two-litre engine matched to the fifth-generation Toyota hybrid electric system, which can produce 135kW, and the vehicle sits between Toyota’s C-HR and RAV4 in terms of size.
Steve Prangnell, Toyota NZ’s general manager of new vehicles, predicts the crossover will become the top-selling model in the Corolla range.
“The all-new Corolla Cross builds on Corolla’s legendary reputation and offers even more versatility and creature comforts to make everything, from a daily commute to a weekend escape, more memorable,” he says.
Toyotas says fuel consumption is 4.8L/100km for the FWD grades and 4.9L/100km for the AWD Limited grade. Meanwhile, carbon dioxide emissions come in at 107gm/km and 112gm/km respectively, making the vehicle eligible for a rebate under the clean car discount.
The Corolla Cross will be available in front-wheel-drive GX and GXL grades, while the Limited version with FWD and AWD options.
Inside, the GX includes a fabric interior trim with an 8-inch colour touchscreen display, single-zone climate control and a six-speaker sound system.
The GXL includes a larger 10.5-inch touchscreen display, satellite navigation, softer touch interior, dual zone climate control, and combination fabric and synthetic leather upholstery.
Extra features for the Limited model include leather accented seating, front seat heaters and steering wheel heater, a premium JBL sound system and a panoramic roof. It also runs on larger wheels – 18-inch dark grey and machined alloys, compared with 17-inch silver alloys on the GX and GXL.
Safety technology across the range includes a pre-collision safety system with autonomous emergency braking for vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles, intersection turn assist and emergency steering assist.
The Corolla Cross GX will be available in five colours, and there are three extra choices available for the GXL and Limited. Pricing starts at $41,990.
