Consistency key for van Gisbergen

Shane van Gisbergen has extended his lead in the Repco Australia Supercars Championship despite not winning a race at The Bend Motorsport Park in the latest round of action.

The Kiwi driver, pictured, was the most consistent top-10 finisher for the May 8-9 round after finishing seventh, third and second across the three races.

He now has a 190-point advantage over Jamie Whincup, who is his Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate, in the championship standings.

Ford dominated at the South Australian circuit with Andre Heimgartner, Anton De Pasquale and Cam Waters all enjoying the taste of victory.

The results extend Van Gisbergen’s winless run to five races after taking the chequered flag in the first six.

“It doesn’t feel like a round win, we really struggled for pace all weekend,” he says.

“But to come out on top of the points and win the round is awesome, so we have to be happy about that.”

Meanwhile, his closest rivals suffered indifferent form with Whincup clinching a sixth, 11th and fourth, while Chaz Mostert retired from Race 10 following a second in the opener.

The next stop in the Supercars championship is the Winton SuperSprint in Victoria on May 29 and 30.
