Z Energy has welcomed the government’s $120 million funding package targeted at electric vehicles (EVs).

As one of the country’s major EV charging providers, the company says it is already working at scale and pace to build a network of on-the-go charging infrastructure at retail service stations.

It believes the targeted funding in this year’s budget will support the acceleration of critical infrastructure that’s needed across New Zealand.

“Z is already leveraging its existing network of service stations to build an EV charging network for Aotearoa and plans to have chargers available across 20 per cent of service stations by the end of this year,” says Lindis Jones, pictured, chief executive officer.

“A scaled domestic EV network that enables accessible, affordable, convenient and reliable charging solutions to meet the needs of drivers now and into the future is core component of the transition to a low-carbon economy.

“This targeted support, alongside a national charging strategy currently being developed, is a real win. It will enable the private sector to collaborate with the government to progress the delivery of EV infrastructure New Zealanders need.”

For businesses such as Z Energy to continue delivering private and public charging, the government also needs to ensure regulatory settings are fit for purpose and market failures are addressed, adds Jones.

“We look forward to continuing to work constructively with the government as we work to address and resolve barriers to the network roll-out and support New Zealanders through this transition.”
