Nick Cassidy has delivered Citroen Racing its first win in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship after taking the chequered flag at the Mexico City E-Prix.

The Kiwi racer started 13th on the grid but made up 12 positions in the second race of the campaign to finish ahead of Edoardo Mortara (Mahindra Racing) and reigning champion Oliver Rowland (Nissan Formula E Team).

“This is unbelievable,” says Cassidy, pictured. “In front of all these amazing fans, this atmosphere is second to none in Formula E, so to get a win here with Citroen, what a dream start we’ve had.

“I’m just so happy for my team and thanks to them for believing in me, for bringing me to be part of this project. I think there are some really cool times ahead – what a moment.”

The New Zealander finished third in the season’s opening round in Brazil last month and now leads the drivers’ standings with 40 points. Britain’s Jake Dennis is second overall on 36 and Rowland third with 34.

Cassidy's compatriot Mitch Evans, who drives for Jaguar TCS Racing, has yet to pick up any points this year after a DNF in Brazil and finishing 11th in Mexico on January 11.

The third round of the series is in Miami on January 31.
