One of the largest auctions of collectors’ cars, motorcycles and automobilia in New Zealand is expected to fetch more than $3.5 million.

Webb’s Auction House is presenting the 83 lots and if the sale meets predictions it would be a record for the Auckland-based company.

A range of prestige marques including Rolls Royce, Porsche, Bentley, Mercedes, Jaguar and Aston Martin all feature in the auction being held on Sunday, December 13.

The offering has more than quadrupled from a 17-lot sale that was due to be held in July 2020 and the lots are now being showcased at the ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane, Auckland.

Highlights include a 1964 Mercedes-Benz 230SL, with an estimate of $160,000 to $180,000, and a 1972 Ford Fairmont XYGT Shaker, which is expected to fetch between $120,000 and $150,000.

A 1989 Lotus Esprit, which is identical to the car Richard Gere drove when he picked up Julia Roberts in the 1990 film Pretty Woman, is also in the catalogue with a price estimate of $35,000 to $40,000.

The Len Pearce Collection of Indian motorcycles is part of the auction and features New Zealand’s only Model 401, which is one of only 280 models worldwide.

Caolan McAleer, from Webb’s, expects plenty of interest in the vehicles going under the hammer.

“Research from across the ditch indicates that folk think a classic vehicle is still a good place to park some money,” he says.

Viewing of the lots is free to the public in the build-up to the auction, which will take place at 2.30pm on December 13.
