BYD may build ute
BYD may be entering new territory by launching its first ute by the end of 2023.
Leaked patent images provide a glimpse into what the Chinese marque’s take on the truck market could look like.
The new model would also become BYD’s first electrified ute with rumoured powertrain options including plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions.
While specifics are scarce, initial reports suggest it will launch as a PHEV on BYD’s DM-p for plug-in off-roaders with a BEV to follow. It will reportedly launch as part of the brand’s Ocean series, which includes the Dolphin and Seals EVs, reports Driven.
Sources indicate the hybrid will boast a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder engine with about 102kW of power with two electric motors delivering 360kW when combined.
The patent images reveal a large BYD logo on the front grille, substantial fenders and bumpers, roof rail and a modest sunroof. It could rival hybrid variants of Toyota’s Hilux and Ford’s Ranger, which will be available in the near future.
New Zealand is reportedly one of the markets BYD is considering for its upcoming electric ute, with Australia, south-east Asia and the Middle East also being considered.
Also reported by www.carnewschina.co.nz is that Chinese pricing for BYD’s ute could range between $94,000 and $141,000 although local pricing or availability has yet to be confirmed.
