Mitsubishi and Kia enjoy sales surges as June’s new-car market suffers slight dip.

Big gains for market leaders

There were 9,563 new passenger vehicles registered in June, which was a drop of 6.9 per cent from 10,272 in the same month of last year.

The top model was Mitsubishi’s Outlander with 903 units for a 9.4 per cent share of the market. It also more than doubled its sales figures of 407 from the previous June.

Kia’s Sportage, pictured, was second with 661, up 214.8 per cent from 210 in June last year, and Mitsubishi’s ASX third on 435, dropping 41.1 per cent from 738 over the same timeframe. 

Completing the top five was Toyota’s RAV4 on 352 units and Hyundai’s Kona with 328.

The Outlander has the most registrations year-to-date after shifting 4,914 units for 8.7 per cent of the market. The RAV4 is second on 2,845 and five per cent, followed by Mitsubishi’s Eclipse Cross with 1,897 and 3.4 per cent.

Mitsubishi was last month’s leading marque with its 1,827 cars registered accounting for 19.1 per cent of the market. Its figures were up 29.9 per cent from June 2021.

Next on the list was Kia with 1,408 units and 14.7 per cent market share, with its registrations also up 38.3 per cent from a year ago. Toyota on 1,285 and 13.4 per cent was unchanged from June 2021.

Hyundai was fourth on the ladder with 848 registrations and Suzuki completed the top five with its 723 units.

Mitsubishi is the leading marque over the first half of the year on 9,028 units and a 16 per cent market share.

Toyota sits in second spot with 7,038 registrations so far this year and 12.5 per cent of the market, followed by Kia on 6,099 and 10.8 per cent.

Next up is Hyundai on 3,839 and 7.6 per cent and fifth spot was filled by Suzuki with 3,839 units for 6.8 per cent of all activity.
