‘Best value SUV’ in NZ

Dongfeng is set to launch the Vigo in New Zealand. It’s a compact electric SUV which “delivers standout space, premium features and genuine versatility at an unmatched price point”.

Positioned as the best-value EV SUV in this country, it has a launch price of $37,990 until the end of April as the marque “strives” to bring all-electric and internal combustion engine parity across multiple segments.

The launch offer includes a free optional large panoramic moon roof valued at $1,500, equating to a total value launch offer of $3,500.

“The first shipment of the new Vigo is about to land, so Kiwis who wish to be among the first to own one should contact a dealer now,” says Simon Rutherford, chief executive of Armstrong’s Distribution Ltd.

“It’s exciting to be introducing this model as it’s another example of Dongfeng breaking barriers to EV ownership.

“With the launch of the Vigo, there is no other small SUV in the market which offers this combination of premium features plus legroom and boot space without compromise. It proves compact on the outside doesn’t have to mean cramped on the inside.”

The SUV comes loaded with safety features as standard, such as six airbags, front and rear-parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

Level-two ADAS features including AEB, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist and intelligent adaptive cruise control. The NZTA has awarded the Vigo a five-star vehicle safety-risk rating.

Its exterior is SUV-inspired with LED headlights and l-shaped daytime running lights, aerodynamic wheels and semi-hidden electronic door handles to maximise efficiency.

At the rear, there are “triangular crystal tower” tail-lights and a double-split tailgate – a feature unique in the EV segment that reinforces the model’s “practical, lifestyle-focused design”.

Inside, the Vigo’s “Rubik’s Cube” design philosophy aims to unlock “exceptional versatility”. Despite its compact footprint, it offers class-leading interior space including a 2,715mm wheelbase, 500-litre total boot capacity and, with ample room for five people, it sets a “new benchmark in the small SUV segment”.

Measuring 4,306mm long, 1,868mm wide and 1,654mm high, the EV is ideally sized for daily urban driving while remaining ready for weekend adventures.

Practical features, such as the tailgate with its 150kg load capacity and vehicle-to-load capability, further enhance its versatility.

The car comes with roof rails, a towing capacity of 750kg and a camping mode that intelligently manages power to maintain the cabin at 25°C while providing continuous power, even when locked.

Owners can personalise their EV with exterior colours. Twilight white is standard. Glacial silver, cyber black, sandy yellow, future orange and wild green are $499 options. There are also two soft-material interior trims available, a no-cost option between grey and black or beige and black.

The Vigo boasts 18-inch alloys, leatherette trim, electric front seats, a heated and ventilated driver’s seat with welcome function, wireless Apple CarPlay and optional Android Auto, wireless charging pad, a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, 8.8-inch digital driver display, ambient lighting with 12 colours that react to music and an external speaker for out-of-vehicle use.

Its 51kWh battery can be charged from 30-80 per cent in 18 minutes and can deliver a WLTP driving range of 340km.

“The Vigo makes premium features and real SUV versatility accessible,” says Rutherford. “This is about removing barriers and making EV ownership genuinely appealing.”

The SUV is backed by a six-year or 200,000km vehicle warranty, eight-year or 200,000km battery warranty and six-year roadside assistance.

Its introductory price of $37,990 ends on April 30, while stock lasts and unless advised otherwise, while $39,990 is its maximum retail price, plus on-road costs.
