Automotive training ‘moves forward’
MITO, the training organisation for automotive, will officially return to industry ownership from January 1, 2026.
The Tertiary Education Commission has approved the organisation’s transition to MITO Limited from the start of next year, via the Transport Industry Skills Board.
MITO had become part of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology but the government has supported its exit and the transfer of all activities and responsibilities to MITO Limited as part of plans to revamp work-based learning.
The organisation has been a part of workforce development for more than 50 years, supporting apprentices, learners and employers across automotive, commercial road transport and other sectors.
The return to industry ownership is expected to strengthen partnerships between MITO, industry and government and ensure training evolves in line with workforce needs.
The commission’s approval for the change follows assessments of MITO Limited’s readiness, capability, quality assurance, programme accreditation and national coverage.
MITO Limited will maintain full national coverage and all MITO’s current qualifications and micro-credentials will remain available.
Sturrock Saunders, chairman of the new MITO Limited board, says: “Industry has always cared deeply about apprenticeships and training. We know what our workforce needs and we’re invested in building strong skill pathways.
“With TEC approval now confirmed, we are thrilled to move forward. MITO Limited is well-positioned to deliver a future-focused, industry-led training system that supports real opportunities for learners, employers and the sectors we serve.”
