Agency unveils $24.3b transport plan
Waka Kotahi has revealed details of the government’s three-year transport programme that will deliver $24.3 billion of investment nationwide.
The agency’s board has confirmed funding across 11 separate investment areas in the 2021-24 National Land Transport Programme (NLTP).
Highlights of the package include $7.2b to be spent on road, walking and cycling network operations and maintenance, $6.6b for local, regional and state highway road improvements, and $3b for Road to Zero safety improvements.
Auckland will receive $7.3b over the next three years for transport project, while Wellington gets $3.1b of investment and Canterbury scores $1.2b.
A total of $15.6b for the NLTP will come from the National Land Transport Fund, which includes cash collected from petrol excise, road user charges and vehicle registration and licensing fees.
Local government will contribute $4.6b to the investment package and the government will provide $3.8b in additional Crown funding.
Nicole Rosie, Waka Kotahi’s chief executive, says NLTP investments are designed to help implement the priorities outlined in the Government Policy Statement for land transport.
She explains the projects being supported aim to deliver the greatest possible benefits for people and communities across New Zealand.
“They’ll help make our transport system safer, more sustainable and make key routes more resilient to help keep people, businesses and communities connected,” adds Rosie, pictured.
“We’re investing more in the land transport system than ever before and will make significant investment in legacy projects in our main urban areas that will support growth, help with economic recovery and set New Zealand on the path to transition to a sustainable economy through record investments in public transport and walking and cycling.
“We have a significant programme of work to deliver and will continue to work closely with councils to do so over the next three years.”
