Agency pooh-poohs plate ideas
Dozens of ideas for personalised plates were rejected by censors at the NZTA last year, with many of them vetoed for being offensive or inappropriate.
Nearly 40 plate suggestions by car owners failed to get past the agency in 2025, including sexual innuendos such as HORNI, 3SUMG and RQQTER, reports 1News.
PCOOK and 2JMDMA were turned down because of drug references, while BASHED and W4RRIG were snubbed by officials because they related to violence.
Censors rejected other licence-plate ideas for being too confusing to read, such as MVVVVV, 666664 and X1XXX1, information released to 1News shows.
NZTA says determining the offensiveness of each personalised plate can be difficult and submissions are “always assessed on a case by case basis”.
