Wraps come off new NX

Lexus has unveiled the new NX ahead of its arrival in New Zealand showrooms next year.

It is the marque’s best-selling model in this country and has become an important part of its growth here since it was first introduced in 2014.

“The NX balances luxury with practicality and that’s why it’s still our best-seller today,” says Andrew Davis, vice-president of Lexus NZ. “This new generation moves it forward again, with a bolder design, more refined drive and exciting new technology.”

The new model has been reworked for the electrified era with an all-new hybrid system, refreshed exterior and interior design, and the brand’s first Sensory Concierge feature with personalised lighting.

The hybrid system is built around a new e-axle that integrates the transaxle, motor and power control unit into a lighter, more compact package with a lower centre of gravity. Low-loss silicon carbide power semiconductors in the inverter improve fuel economy and dynamic performance.

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) NX450h+ gains a newly developed battery for eight per cent more output and 30 per cent more capacity to “significantly” extend its EV driving range.

DC fast-charging support cuts charging time, and a power-operated charging lid adds everyday convenience. A revised, transversely mounted battery layout improves body rigidity and lowers the centre of gravity, sharpening handling and stability.

The new NX evolves the marque’s “vital tech” design language with a wider, lower stance and a more dynamic, integrated front end. Black accents replace much of the exterior chrome, while the rear gains Lexus’ first “double l” signature with illuminated l-shaped elements either side of an illuminated logo.

Inside, a horizontally aligned 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14-inch multimedia display minimise eye movement from the road, paired with a redesigned steering wheel and new touch-sensitive responsive hidden switches.

F Sport models add unique exterior detailing, piano black trim, 20-inch lightweight alloys, red brake callipers and an all-black, driver-focused instrument panel with contrast stitching.

The new Sensory Concierge feature co-ordinates lighting, music, climate, seat temperature and fragrance across three modes. These are inspire for a sense of exhilaration, radiance for focus and revitalise for relaxation, tailoring the cabin to the occupants' mood.

A fragrance generator in the glovebox holds up to three cartridges, selectable from five signature scents inspired by Lexus’ design philosophy of “time”, each of which can also be paired with matching visuals, music and lighting.
