Warning for importers

The Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA) is reminding members to ensure imported vehicles meet electronic stability control (ESC) requirements.

“VIA is aware that several recently imported vehicles have been rejected at inspection for not having electronic stability control,” says Malcolm Yorston, technical support.

“Don’t let this happen to you. If you’re unsure whether a used vehicle in another jurisdiction is ESC-equipped, have a trusted person examine it to confirm before purchasing.”

VIA explains vehicles of MA, MB, or MC classes under 20 years old should not be imported unless they have ESC.

Its advice in an email alert on July 6 says members should:

• Verify ESC: Ensure a trusted individual checks if the vehicle has ESC before agreeing to purchase.

• Compliance check: Always confirm compliance with New Zealand’s ESC requirements for all vehicles.

Any members with questions can contact VIA on 0800-842-842 or email info@via.org.nz.
