Videos to help inspectors

Waka Kotahi has released a range of videos to guide inspectors in their work.
The safer vehicles team at the transport agency has been working for the past year on updating and improving the clarity of its vehicle inspection requirements manuals (VIRMs).
The 13 videos that make up its warrant of fitness (WOF) guide are the latest part of that work.
The videos, which cover a variety of areas ranging from brake testing and beam setting to under-bonnet inspections and check-sheet completion, are relatively short at two to five minutes long, and have been provided as a “how to” guide rather than as a set of instructions.
Five people from Waka Kotahi were involved in the filming with the Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association (LVVTA) providing the location.
Jim Anderson, the agency’s South Island manager of safer vehicles, says the subjects for the videos were settled on after several industry workshops.
“The feedback we got was that pictures and videos would be the most helpful form of guidance we could provide.”
The 13 videos include inspections for under body, under bonnet, tyres, seat belts, light trailer and interior.
The others cover quality management system, check-sheet completion, vehicle identification and class, laden steering check, brake testing, beam setter use
corrosion and assessment.
Malcolm Yorston, technical manager of the Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association, says: “These videos may help you understand the various reasons cars get rejected and help you when doing a pre-WOF inspection or assessing a trade-in.”
The videos are all available online at vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/wof-videos.
