Wholesale sale values for motor vehicles and parts rose 3.9 per cent in the June 2018 quarter, after a 1.8 per cent fall in the March 2018 quarter, according to Stats NZ's latest figures. 

Overall, the seasonally adjusted total sales value for wholesale trade rose 2.6 per cent in the June 2018 quarter when compared with the March 2018 quarter, according to Stats NZ's latest figures.

Five of the six wholesaling industries had sales rises in the June 2018 quarter.

The largest industry increase was in grocery, liquor, and tobacco wholesaling, which was up 3.0 per cent, or $236 million.

Wholesale vehicle stocks up 25%

The actual value of wholesale stocks of motor vehicle and parts in the June quarter was $2.6 billion, up 25 per cent, or $507m, when compared with the June 2017 quarter.

The June 2018 quarter is the second-largest percentage increase ever for the motor vehicle and parts industry, with the September 2017 quarter recording the largest with a 26.8 per cent increase.

All six wholesale industries recorded stock value increases in the June 2018 quarter.

Machinery and equipment had the second-largest rise of all industries, up 13 per cent, or $371m.
