Nissan model makes big year-on-year gain but top five stays same for third month in a row.

The number of used-imported cars registered in New Zealand fell by 4.1 per cent last month to 7,014, when compared with the 7,311 units in October 2024.

The latest figure takes the year-to-date total to 71,557, which is 14.5 per cent lower than the 83,667 units at the same stage a year ago.

Toyota’s Aqua was the best-selling model last month with 775 registrations – up by 20 units from October last year – and a market share of 11 per cent.

The top five was unchanged for the third consecutive month as Toyota also claimed the next two spots on the October sales ladder with the Prius second on 485 units and 6.9 per cent and the Corolla third with 364 and 5.2 per cent.

Nissan’s Note, pictured, was one of the month’s biggest climbers with its 320 sales, which accounted for 4.6 per cent of the market, a 51 per cent increase from 211 a year ago. 

Completing the top five for October was the Mazda Axela on 256 units and 3.6 per cent of all activity.

The Aqua is top of the year-to-date standings on 7,505 units and a market share of 10.5 per cent, followed by the Prius on 5,158 and 7.2 per cent.

Toyota was the leading marque in October with 2,690 registrations for 38.4 per cent of the market. Its monthly total was up by 4.2 per cent from 2,582 in the same month of 2024. 

Mazda was the second most popular brand last month with 1,008 units for a market share of 14.4 per cent, and Nissan was third on 983 registrations, or 14 per cent. 

Year to date, Toyota leads the marques’ ladder with 26,659 registrations and a 37.3 per cent market share. 

Nissan is next on 9,986 and 14 per cent, and Mazda has 9,825 and 13.7 per cent.
