Used imports continue slump

The number of used-imported cars registered in New Zealand fell by 10.2 per cent last month to 8,063, when compared with the 8,982 units in July 2024.

The latest figure takes the year-to-date total to 50,009, which is 18.1 per cent lower than the 61,025 units at the same stage a year ago.

The Toyota Aqua, pictured, was the most popular model last month with 922 registrations – up 10.3 per cent from 836 units in July last year – and a market share of 11.4 per cent.

Next was Toyota’s Prius on 584 units and 7.2 per cent of the market and the Nissan Note on 403 and five per cent. 

Toyota’s Corolla was fourth with 370 sales for a 4.6 per cent market share and the Mazda Axela completed the top five on 318 units and 3.9 per cent.

The Aqua is top of the year-to-date standings on 5,156 units and a market share of 10.3 per cent, followed by the Prius on 3,633  and 7.3 per cent.

Toyota was the leading marque in July with 2,993 registrations for 37.1 per cent of the market. Its monthly total was down by 8.6 per cent from 3,273 in the same month of 2024. 

Nissan was the second most popular brand last month with 1,174 units for a market share of 14.6 per cent, and Mazda was third on 1,136 registrations, or 14.1 per cent. 

Year to date, Toyota leads the marques’ ladder with 18,464 registrations and a 36.9 per cent market share. 

Nissan is next on 7,049 and 14.1 per cent, and Mazda has 6,671 and 13.3 per cent.
