Used-import market grows 13%

The number of used-imported cars registered in New Zealand totalled 8,005 last month, an increase of 13.4 per cent from 7,061 units in September 2025.

Year-to-date, there have been 68,502 registrations, which is 6.3 per cent higher than 64,455 units at the same stage a year ago.

Toyota’s Aqua was the best-selling model in September with 915 registrations – up by 21.2 per cent from 755 units in the same month last year – and a market share of 11.4 per cent.

The top five models were unchanged from August, with the Toyota Prius next on 502 units and 6.3 per cent of the market. 

Nissan’s Note placed third with 446 and 5.6 per cent, followed by Toyota’s Corolla with 421 and 5.3 per cent, and Subaru’s Impreza on 242 and three per cent.

The Aqua, pictured, leads the year-to-date standings on 6,650 units and a market share of 9.7 per cent, followed by the Prius with 4,192 and 6.1 per cent.

Toyota was the leading marque in September with 3,163 registrations for 39.5 per cent of the market. Its monthly total was up by 18.4 per cent from 2,672 in the same month of 2025. 

Nissan was the second most popular brand last month with 1,254 units for a market share of 15.7 per cent, and Mazda was third on 939 and 11.7 per cent. 

Year to date, Toyota leads the way with 24,739 registrations and a 36.1 per cent market share. 

Nissan is next on 10,830 and 15.8 per cent, and Mazda has 8,531 and 12.5 per cent.
