Toyota stays on top

Marque remains number one for new passenger vehicles, with Kia and Mitsubishi its closest rivals.

There were 9,568 new passenger vehicles registered during May, which was a decrease of 9.3 per cent from 10,552 in the same month of 2022. The year-to-date total is now 43,731.

The Toyota RAV4, pictured, topped the models’ ladder with 860 sales and a market share of nine per cent. It’s also New Zealand’s leading model so far in 2023 with 2,530 registrations and a 5.8 per cent market share.

Mitsubishi’s Outlander was second on 452 units and 4.7 per cent of the market, while Suzuki’s Swift came third with 403 and 4.2 per cent.

MG’s ZS claimed fourth spot on the ladder with a 4.1 per cent share of activity thanks to 391 registrations, while the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross rounded out the top five with 363 units and 3.8 per cent.

May’s best-selling brand was Toyota with a market share of 18.7 per cent and 1,785 units. Its total was down by 6.3 per cent year-on-year. 

Mitsubishi came second with 1,098 registrations and 11.5 per cent, although its total for last month dropped by 34.7 per cent compared with May 2022.

Third spot was claimed by Hyundai, which notched up a year-on-year increase of 27.2 per cent. It sold 870 cars last month for a 9.1 per cent market share.

Suzuki came fourth on 681 for a market share of 7.1 per cent. Kia completed the top five with 647 registrations and 6.8 per cent market share.

Year-to-date, Toyota is the top marque with 7,008 sales and 16 per cent of the market. Kia is its closest rival on 4,510 registrations and 10.3 per cent, followed by Mitsubishi with 3,768 sales and 8.6 per cent.
